2017 registers as the third-warmest year on record globally
In many parts of the United States, 2017 was a year of extremes, including northern Nevada. We saw a record snow in the winter followed by record heat in the summer months and one of the most active wildfire seasons in recent history.
On Thursday January 18th, NASA and NOAA jointly released their global temperature analyses for 2017, and the result was 2017 ranked as the 3rd warmest year on record. Marking the 84th straight year the global temperature has been above average.
The curve ball, we were under La Nina conditions which should have helped cool the globe. Making this the warmest year on record without an El Nino in the Pacific Ocean, a pattern that persisted in the top 2 warmest years, 2016 & 2015.
