Reno 1868 FC names Ian Russell as head coach
Reno 1868 FC, a first-year United Soccer League club based in Reno, has named Ian Russell as head coach for its inaugural 2017 season, the team announced in a press release Tuesday.
“This is a huge step for our team,” Andy Smith, general manager of Reno 1868 FC, said in the release. “With Ian’s significant background, both playing and coaching in MLS, we know our team will be in good hands.”
Russell played for the University of Washington before playing professionally for the Seattle Sounders of the USL and later the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS. With the Earthquakes, Russell helped the squad win two MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003.
Prior to taking over as the Reno 1868 FC coach, Russell was an assistant coach for the Earthquakes for eight seasons.
“I’m extremely excited for this unique opportunity,” Russell said in the release. “I’m very thankful for my time with the Earthquakes and to continue on within the club’s organizational pyramid is a dream come true. I’m looking forward to meeting the people of Reno and leading a team they can be proud to support.”
Russell will face his former club on Feb. 18, 2017, when Reno 1868 FC faces off with the Earthquakes in its first preseason match.
