Nevada's Cam Oliver says he will hire agent for NBA Draft, forgoing college eligibility
Nevada's Cameron Oliver says he intends to hire an agent for the upcoming 2017 NBA Draft, thereby forgoing his remaining two years of college eligibility.
Oliver broke the news to News 4-Fox 11 on Thursday.
"Yeah I'm in the process of doing so," Cam said to News 4 when asked if he was hiring an agent. "I'm in a great position to pursue this dream and do it for a very long time. Right now I'm just kind of training and working out to be able to succeed in these NBA workouts that are coming up upon us in these next couple of weeks."
The sophomore forward announced last month that he would enter his name into the draft, but that he had not hired an agent. NCAA rules state student-athletes lose their amateur status if they retain an agent.
"It took me a minute to really think about a lot of things," Oliver said as to why he decided at this time to hire an agent. "For me to be in the position I am right now, that's a really great position for me to be in. I haven't hired anyone but it's my intention to. As of right now, I'm just worried about working out and really focused on those NBA workouts that are coming up."
Oliver also thinks he is ready for the changing climate of the NBA stating, "With the way the NBA is going right now, with power forwards and small game centers, you gotta be able to shoot and dribble and pass like an actual guard. I can definitely bring that towards the team and to the NBA also. Also I'm a very hard worker. I'm at the position I want to be in now and I want to stay there. I'm not going to let it just slip out of my hands."
He also said last year he would enter the 2016 draft without an agent, but later declared in May he would return to the Wolf Pack.
Oliver averaged 16 points and 8.7 rebounds for the 2016-17 season, helping the Wolf Pack to win the Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament titles.
The Oakland Native ended the conversation with a message for Pack fans:
"I just love the support you guys gave me. From a person who went through so much to get to the position I'm in right now, I definitely appreciate Nevada and the Wolf Pack fans for supporting me having my back. For giving this young kid from Oakland a second chance to pursue his dream and pursue his basketball career. I will love you guys at all times and hopefully the feeling is mutual. Keep supporting me and I'll definitely support you guys at the next level."
