Nevada topples Rhode Island, starts season 2-0

Nevada's Caleb Martin celebrates after hitting a three-pointer late in Monday's win over Rhode Island

Behind a strong defensive effort, and a relentless approach at getting to the free throw line, the Wolf Pack were able to fend off Rhode Island for an 88 to 81 win at Lawlor Events Center.

The Rams, who were picked as the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10 Conference, rallied down from a 38-28 deficit at halftime. The Rams mounted an offensive run to tie the game at 66 apiece with 8:08 left.

Nevada pushed back though, holding Rhode Island to just two points for the next four-plus minutes.

Caleb Martin drained two 3-pointers with less than three minutes left, including one to beat the shot clock, and got a dunk in the final minute to put away the game for the Wolf Pack.

The Pack sank 36-of-44 free throw attempts to seal their second victory of the season.

Jordan Caroline led the way with 28 points (14-of-17 from free throw line) and 12 rebounds, while Caleb Martin added 24 points off the bench. His twin brother Cody also finished in double figures with 13.

Nevada forced 14 turnovers with seven steals and four blocks.

Jared Terrell led the Rams with 24 points, followed by E.C. Matthews with 18.

Up next, the Pack will have another short turnaround as they head to Northern California for a pair of games on the road. First up they will play Santa Clara out of the West Coast Conference. Tip is set for 7 p.m. You can watch the action on TheW.TV

Nevada continues with a road game on Saturday at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
