Ask Joe: Will Sparks homeless camp be allowed to stay?
Friday's Ask Joe question: Viewer Sarai Romero wants to know if a new homeless camp that has popped up along the river in Sparks will be allowed to stay?
Here's what I found out:
We went out and checked it out and there's a line of tents set up there next to the mental health facility along Galletti Way. There are also signs posted that there is no camping or loitering allowed there. This is Sparks territory on that side of the Truckee River so I checked with them about this. Julie Deuwel, the city's spokesperson says yes it is illegal to camp there but this is part of a larger problem and that is finding adequate resources for the homeless..
If police arrest them chances are they will be back out on the streets the same day Duewell says.
So instead they're doing their best to provide them with any resources that might help them. Unfortunately there are no simple answers to this problem.
Duewell did point out there is a new Regional Community Homelessness Advisory Board that's been formed. It is a collaborative effort between Reno, Sparks and Washoe County to come up with long term solutions to the homeless problem. That board will start meeting soon to take up issues like this. In the meantime, that homeless camp will stay where it is for the time being.
