Ask Joe: What happened to the Nugget Christmas trees?
It's a familiar site around here during the holidays that seems to be missing this year, at least so far, and one of our viewers reached out to ask about it.
Randy Glinsman wrote in on Facebook to ask what happened to the Christmas tree that is usually lit up on the top of the Sparks Nugget? Randy says he misses seeing it up there and wants to know if it's gone for good.
Here's what I found out:
After Randy asked about this I decided to drive by after work and take a look. I didn't see any tree lit up on the roof of the Nugget. So our viewer Randy seems to raise a good question.
News 4 photographer John Linn took a trip over there during daylight hours and it does look like the metal trees are still up on top of the building (one on each tower) but they are just are not being lit up for some reason.
According to Randy Kennedy with the Nugget’s P-R staff the metal trees and lights have deteriorated over the years and management has decided they are simply too expensive and too time consuming to repair so those trees will not be lit up on the top of the Nugget towers anymore.
In the meantime, the city of Sparks will hold its official Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Victorian Square on Friday night, November 30th, at 6:30 p.m.
Also, the Sparks Hometown Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday December 1st from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Floats, marching bands and Santa himself will be on hand for that.
So hopefully it will be a good turn-out for those events. Sorry to hear we wont see those trees lit up on the Nugget towers anymore. It seemed to be one of those Nevada things that long time residents could look forward to seeing every holiday season as they passed by the Nugget. At least now you know why they won't be lit up anymore!
