Ask Joe: What happened to all the trees at Shadow Mountain Park?
From the Ask Joe file, we're looking into a question about a local park that has taken on a different look.
Several people wrote in asking about this. One of them was Becky Hubert, who wants to know why trees were cut down around the Shadow Mountain softball fields in Sparks.
Here's what I found out:
Shadow Mountain is one of the older parks in our area. I checked with Julie Duewel at the city of Sparks. She says the city had to remove the trees last week because of an infestation of beetle bugs.
You can see it really has changed the look of the park. More than a dozen trees were taken down.
Deuwel says they really had no choice because the trees had become brittle, and they were afraid someone was going to get hurt from a falling branch or possibly an entire tree falling over.
There is some good news though. The city is partnering up with two rotary clubs for a grant to replace the trees. The city would dig the holes and bring in the soil, and the rotary clubs would plant the new trees and put in a new drip system.
Deuwel says they are looking at planting evergreen trees this time around and they hope to plant them in the fall.
