Ask Joe: What are those giant poles going up along Highway 395?
Tuesday's Ask Joe question: Viewer Jim Keller wrote in asking about some very tall poles that are being constructed along U.S. 395 and he wants to know what they are going to be used for?
Here's what I found out:
I checked with NDOT about this. Their spokeswoman Meg Ragonese says what our viewer is asking about are 80 foot tall poles that will have closed circuit cameras mounted on top of them. Right now eight of them have been installed along U.S. 395 in the North Valleys. Four more will go up between Oddie and Parr Boulevard.
This is all part of the Intelligent Transportation System the state is installing to keep drivers safe. The system will include ramp meters, wrong way driver detection systems, travel time signs and traffic cameras as well.
The project began last summer and construction is expected to wrap up later this summer. And keep in mind as we've mentioned there will be some single lane closures over the next few nights as crews will be working to install freeway message signs along that stretch which are also part of this Intelligent Transportation System.
