Ask Joe: Have airport and Air Races worked out their differences?
Tuesday's Ask Joe question: John in Reno wants to know if the Reno Air Race organization worked out its differences with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority?
Here's what I found out:
This is a story we covered back in November and at that time the Air Races organization told us they weren't sure how much longer they would be able to stay here because of concerns about the airports plans to develop the area around the Stead Airport.
Since then, the Air Races and the Airport Authority have agreed to a two year deal. So the short term questions seem to have been resolved.
The airport is holding a public meeting to talk about future development plans. The airport's Master Plan outlining growth and development for the next 20 years is up for approval. So we'll know a lot more after that meeting where things stand and whether the airport's plans and the Air Races will be able to co-exist in the years to come.
That meeting is set for this Thursday, May 24th from 3:30 to 6:00 in the River Room at the Reno-Tahoe Airport. That's across from carousel #4.
The public is welcome to attend the meeting. Airport spokesman Brian Kulpin says they've been holding meetings for two years and this will likely be the last one before the Master Plan is approved.
Another issue the airport has to consider is what NDOT plans to do with the freeway exit that leads to the airport. NDOT says it might consider getting rid of that "fly-over" as part of future Spaghetti Bowl reconstruction. Obviously that would have a big impact on the airport's plans so that is something that will likely be discussed on Thursday as well.
