Donald Trump: 'The shackles have been taken off me'
Donald Trump is apparently now unshackled.
Following a House GOP conference call Monday in which Speaker Paul Ryan reportedly told members he would not be campaigning for Trump and they should distance themselves from the nominee if necessary, Trump unleashed a series of furious tweets about Republicans not showing him enough support Tuesday.
“Our very weak and ineffective leader, Paul Ryan, had a bad conference call where his members went wild at his disloyalty,” Trump wrote on Tuesday morning.
About an hour later, Trump boasted that the “shackles” are now off of him. Presumably this means he is no longer concerned with maintaining party unity, to the extent that he ever was.
“It is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to,” he said.
Dozens of Republican lawmakers said this weekend that they will no longer support Trump after a decade-old recording was released last Friday of him bragging about kissing and groping women without their permission.
Trump continues to insist that this was just “locker room talk.”
In initial polls conducted after Friday’s news, Trump slipped further behind Democrat Hillary Clinton. The few scientific polls completed since their second debate Sunday showed Clinton is widely seen as the winner, so he may not get a boost out of that.
Trump threatened at a rally Monday that if more damaging recordings of him come out, he will attack the Clintons even harder.
Although Ryan is now directing his efforts toward maintaining a GOP majority in the House to rein in a President Clinton if she wins, some Republican fear that the infighting will damage their chances in down-ballot races. Most Republican voters say they do want the party to stand by Trump, according to the latest polls.
The now shackle-free Trump is currently blasting "disloyal" Republicans on Twitter.
Twitter users have expressed shock and amusement at the notion that the Trump who has dominated headlines with controversial statements and behavior for the last 16 months was somehow restrained.
The election is 28 days away. Buckle up.
