Juvenile arrested in connection with Shaw Middle School threat
A juvenile suspect has been arrested in connection with a threat of violence targeting Shaw Middle School, according to Washoe County School officials.
School police arrested the juvenile after a threat was posted on social media Tuesday night.
The juvenile, whose name will not be released because of the suspect's age, was taken into custody at the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center.
According to the district, while school police do not believe this threat was credible, approximately 480 Shaw Middle School students—about half of the student body—stayed home from classes on Wednesday.
The district said every effort was made to contact the school community with accurate information about law enforcement efforts to protect the students, staff members and school property this morning via a Connect Ed call.
“We work closely with other local law enforcement agencies, and were assisted by School Secret Witness in this case,” said WCSD School Police Chief Jason Trevino. “We kept a high profile at the school today, and as we continue to investigate this case, we urge all parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s social media activity. These are extremely serious charges that resulted from an extremely serious action on the part of a juvenile. We consistently educate young people about the consequences of their actions, and this is yet another example of an action that can carry severe consequences.”
