UNR doctor discovers molecule that could be the key to curing type 2 diabetes
University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Associate Professor Seungil Ro, Ph.D. was awarded $2 million to continue research on a cure for type 2 diabetes.
The funding came after Dr. Ro discovered a molecule that plays a crucial role in the disease. He said that people with diabetes have this molecule "turned off."
Dr. Ro and his team are using the funding to search for an FDA- approved chemical compound that will turn the molecule "on".
He said that once they find the compound, they will conduct animal testing and other tests.
That process could take years, but Dr. Ro is confident in his ability to find a cure.
The research is funded by YUYANG Dnu Co., Ltd.
