Slain Washington sheriff's deputy is from small N. California town
The Washington sheriff's deputy shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday hails from a small Northern California town just 45 minutes from Reno.
Pierce County Deputy Daniel McCartney responded to a home invasion robbery call in Frederickson, Washington late Sunday night.
During a foot pursuit, one of the suspects shot McCartney, injuring him critically. He was taken to a hospital in Tacoma where he later died.
Authorities said 34-year-old McCartney left behind a wife and three boys, ages 4, 6 and 9.
After serving in the Navy for six years, McCartney was honorably discharged and started pursuing a career in law enforcement.
McCartney grew up in Loyalton, a town of less than 1,000 people in Sierra County, California.
Loyalton residents will gather for a candlelight vigil Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Loyalton Park on Beckwith Road.
