Washoe County trustees voted Tuesday to name a new Spanish Springs middle school Sky Ranch.

The options were narrowed to three choices by a school naming committee. Sky Ranch was the name of a World War II-era airfield that was near the site of the future school.

The other two choices were Michael Landsberry, a teacher at Sparks Middle School who was killed trying to stop a student with a gun in 2013, and Debbie Smith, a Nevada state senator who died last year from a brain tumor.

At Tuesday's meeting, Trustee Katy Simon Holland said Smith's family reached out to her and asked for her name to be withdrawn from consideration. The family is open to her name coming up for another school, she added.

A representative for the school naming committee also said Landsberry's family could not be reached to determine if they would be comfortable with a school named for him.

A groundbreaking for the new school, located at 1000 Kiley Parkway, is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 14. The school is scheduled to open in August 2019.
