Mayor Hillary Schieve proclaims June 19 as Juneteenth for the city of Reno, following former Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval's proclamation in 2011.

Juneteenth, also known as "Emancipation Day" or "Freedom Day," is a nationally recognized date when the last slaves in America were freed.

In this proclamation, Mayor Schieve states that the city of Reno is committed to removing systemic racism and creating a safe and welcoming community where all people are valued.

The City of Reno is proud to join the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society (NNBCAS) in commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrating Black culture in the Biggest Little City.
