Police find animal crate with handcuffs in apartment where 5-year-old Reno girl died
A Reno father and step mother arrested in the death of a 5-year-old girl lived in a filthy apartment and failed to give their child medical treatment, new court documents reveal.
Tyler and Averyauna Anderson, both 23 and from Reno, were arrested last week on suspicion of child abuse and destroying or concealing evidence.
According to Reno Police, the girl's body was found in a Sacramento storage facility on Tuesday, May 15 after Tyler Anderson rented a U-Haul to transport her body from Reno to Sacramento.
Arrest reports obtained by News 4-Fox 11 show detectives found the couple lived in an "extremely unkempt" apartment, with dirty clothing, spoiled food and a stained mattress.
Reno Police detectives also discovered an animal crate in the bathroom with handcuffs attached to it. A backpack with the girl's clothing was inside the crate, along with a hat with her name on it.
There was no other evidence of a pet living inside the apartment, according to the arrest report.
Averyauna, Tyler's wife, told police the girl had lost "considerable" weight, had trouble digesting food and vomited on different occasions.
They never took her to a hospital or to see a doctor, according to the documents, and police believed they were likely "isolating (her) from any type of public contact."
On May 4th, 2018, they found her immobile and unresponsive in one of the bedrooms with a weak pulse and shallow breathing.
Attempts to resuscitate her with CPR were unsuccessful, so they tried putting her in cold water in the shower to wake her up.
"At no time did Tyler and Averyauna make any effort to call emergency medical services to treat (her)," the report states.
After determining the girl was dead, the couple changed her clothing and put her into a duffel bag in the bedroom closet where she remained for about a week.
In the meantime, Tyler researched how to dispose of the body online.
On May 10th, they rented a U-Haul van, and on May 11th, they drove her body in the duffel bag down to a friend's storage facility in Sacramento.
Averyuana is being held at the Washoe County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bail.
Tyler is in Sacramento waiting to be extradited back to Northern Nevada.
