Online petition seeks to change lice policy in Washoe County schools
A petition seeking a change in the Washoe County School District's lice policy is getting renewed attention on social media.
The petition, which started last year, has nearly 4,000 signatures so far of its goal of 5,000 signatures to request the district change its policy.
The school district does not have any rules in place to prohibit students with head lice from coming to class or riding the bus. Teachers are also not required to tell parents if a student has head lice.
Despite outrage from some parents, WCSD officials say the current policy is fine. Jen Crane with the district's Student Health Services said the American Journal of Pediatrics does not recommend removing children due to head lice.
