One dead, one in critical condition following wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 near Verdi
One person is dead and another is in critical condition following a deadly crash on Interstate 80 near Verdi late Thursday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Authorities say a white Mitsubishi Montero Sport was driving the wrong direction on eastbound I-80 near Boomtown just before midnight on Oct. 12. The car struck an oncoming silver Toyota 4Runner causing the Mitsubishi to overturn and catch fire.
The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver struck was extrication from their vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with major injuries.
Trooper Dan Gordon says the wrong-way driver has been identified as 39-year-old James Liston of Reno.
Troopers suspect that impairment may have been a contributing factor in this crash.
