On Your Side exclusive: A look at the Reno riot from police body cameras
Through a public records request, News 4's Kim Burrows got several officers' body camera footage from the night of Reno's riots.
On May 30, a peaceful protest took place at the Reno City Plaza and lasted a couple of hours.
The group marched down Virginia Street, and body camera footage showed that several protesters fist bumped the officer blocking vehicle traffic for the group to pass.
After the majority of peaceful protesters dispersed, another group moved in. That group of people also had a message they wanted officers and the community to hear, but it was expressed with violence.
People threw rocks into windows at Reno City Hall and started fires inside. Other nearby businesses suffered damage too.
Body camera video shows that around 7 p.m., Reno Police Officers in riot gear moved in to secure the city building and put up metal barriers to create some distance.
Officers' videos show that's when people in the crowd threw rocks and water bottles at officers.
By 8 p.m., more people approached officers yelling at them. One man is heard yelling at officers: "Killer, killer. Take off that f--ing uniform and I'll f--ing smoke you." Others were seen pacing along the barricades yelling at officers.
Around 9 p.m., the city imposed a curfew, announced over a speaker. Shortly after that, the body cameras show officers fired several rounds of tear gas into the crowd.
The crowd eventually dispersed after midnight, and law Enforcement officers arrested two dozen people.
