More legal woes for Dr. Robert Rand as civil lawsuit is filed in patient's death

In addition to criminal charges, Reno Family Care physician Dr. Robert Rand is now officially facing a civil lawsuit.

Federal prosecutors accuse Rand of being part of a criminal enterprise tied to eight employees at the Jones West Ford dealership, including Richard West, Jr. Federal agents made the arrests beginning on April 28, 2016. Rand was arrested in San Francisco the following day. Rand and the others are facing numerous charges stemming from accusations they were illegally distributing prescription drugs, including oxycodone.

Reno attorney William Jeanney spoke with News 4 about the civil complaint. He said Michael Yenick was a patient of Rand's for nearly a two-year period. He said during that time, Yenick became addicted to oxycodone, and the suit accuses Rand of failing to properly monitor Yenick after prescribing the narcotic.

Jeanney said, "In addition, Yenick was being prescribed six tablets a day. Each tablet was 30 milligrams, which contains the equivalent of 1.5 grams of morphine," Jeanney added, "I think most pain management specialists and physicians would tell you this is a very, very high and large oxycodone level."

The attorney said he, the family, and others are concerned about Rand's other patients adding, "We have reason to believe Yenick wasn't the only one."

The Nevada State Medical Society confirms as many as 900 to 1,000 people were being treated by Rand.

There is no attorney noted on the civil documents. News 4 did reach out to Rand's criminal attorney and are still waiting for a response. Rand has 30 days to respond to the civil complaint. He was being extradited to Reno after waiving a detention hearing in San Francisco.
