A community came together Tuesday to remember two firefighters who were killed in a crash earlier this month.

People filled the Winnemucca Events Complex for the memorial for Jacob O'Malley, 27, and Will Hawkins, 22, firefighters for the Bureau of Land Management.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and BLM Deputy Director Steve Ellis were among the dignitaries present.

People remembered Jacob and Will as outgoing firefighters who were part of the firefighting family.

Both men and a third firefighter were returning from a service call in Denio on Sunday, July 10, when a tire blew out on their engine, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

The truck rolled over, and O'Malley and Hawkins succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The third firefighter, identified as Zachery McElroy, was injured and transported to a Reno hospital for treatment.

Several northern Nevada McDonald's restaurants will host a fundraiser on Thursday, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Participating restaurants will donate 20 percent of sales between those hours to the O'Malley Family Fund.
