RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) -- On-campus housing demands continue to grow at the University of Nevada, Reno.
According to university officials, the demand is at 122 percent of current housing. This upcoming semester the school had 50% increase in applications for student housing.
To alleviate some of the demand, a new dorm is opening for the 2018-2019 school year. Great Basin Hall on North Virginia Street will hold 400 students -- 90 percent freshmen and 10 percent upperclassmen.
The hall is specifically geared for STEM students, as enrollment in engineering field has nearly doubled the last 10 years. Students in the hall will also receive mentoring opportunities to help recruit and retain students in science, technology, engineering and math.
Great Basin Hall is Gold LED certified too, equipped with LED lighting and parts made from recycled materials-impacts on the environment will be minimal.
The university's first official day of school is August 27.
