Smithridge Stem Academy teacher honored

A teacher at Smithridge STEM Academy is bringing his passion for the world of science to his classroom in Reno. This month he is News Four's Excellence in Education Award Winner!

5th grade teacher Seth Kovar was shocked recently when evening anchor Shelby Sheehan knocked on the door of his classroom to give him the award from News Four.

Kovar, who has been teaching for 6 years as a self described "late bloomer teacher" is called the "Mayor" at school because of his willingness to connect with just about everyone on campus.

People says he is always checking in with his students, younger students and parents, even learning Spanish to be able to do that and be a part of the predominately Spanish speaking community.

Outside of daily school work, Mr. Kovar runs the robotics team for Smithridge where student compete and is constantly trying to figure out new ways to bring his love of science to his students.

He says growing up in upstate New York kindled a passion in him of the outdoors that he wants to be sure to pass on to his students.

Congratulations to Seth Kovar, News Four's Excellence in Education Award Winner for the month of January!
