Former Ace Marte passes in car accident
RENO, Nev. —
One current and one former MLB player passed away Sunday in separate car accidents, one of whom spent a summer in Reno as a third baseman for the Aces.
Andy Marte died after his car reportedly crashed into a house in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday. Marte was 33.
He played for the Aces in 2014 and collected 19 home runs and 80 RBI with the team. Marte had not played in the majors since 2014 and had spent the last two years in the Korea Baseball Organization.
Play by play voice Ryan Radtke remembers the third baseman fondly:
"Andy was just one of those guys where he bridged every gap. Clubhouses sometimes can be very divided with Spanish speaking players on one side and English speaking players on the other. Andy was a guy that was a great bridge in the clubhouse. The Latin players looked up to him. The young English speaking players looked up to him because he was just a true pro. He came in everyday with a smile on his face. He worked incredibly hard. One of the best defensive third baseman that I ever had a chance to be around and a guy that obviously had tremendous power as well. Just one of those guys who you just loved seeing every day because you knew he’d always have a smile on his face and good word for everybody."
A funeral service for Marte has yet to be announced.
