Halfpipe skier David Wise, the Reno native who took home the gold at Sochi four years ago, has qualified for a spot in the Winter Olympics next month.

Wise qualified for PyeongChang with a first-place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix at Snowmass, Colorado. He's the first skier to qualify for the men's halfpipe team.

"The Snowmass Grand Prix was one of the most technically advanced competitions I’ve ever been a part of," Wise said in a statement. "The level of skiing is the highest it’s ever been, and I count it a huge honor to be out here competing."

He'll compete at the final Grand Prix event in Mammoth Mountain, California, and at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, before heading to South Korea.

Maddie Bowman, a native of South Lake Tahoe, California, also qualified for the women's halfpipe ski competition Friday.
