Nevada football falls to Northwestern 31-20 in season-opener
EVANSTON, Ill. (News 4 & Fox 11) —
Leading 20-17 over Northwestern midway through the fourth quarter, the Nevada football team appeared primed to open the Jay Norvell era with a big win over a Big Ten opponent.
But then, the Wolf Pack were put on their heels and never recovered. Northwestern orchestrated a 75-yard scoring drive to take a 24-20 lead and tacked on another touchdown with 52 second to play, ending Nevada's upset hopes in a 31-20 loss Saturday at Ryan Field.
Nevada led 17-7 at halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown passes by Ty Gangi, who was named the starting quarterback before kickoff. Spencer Pettit capped the half with a 31-yard field goal late in the frame.
Gangi finished 28 of 38 passing for 352 yards to lead the way for the Pack.
Nevada (0-1) will play its home opener against MAC foe Toledo next week.
