Ask Joe: What happened to veteran who was on the verge of eviction?
From the Ask Joe file, we are following up on a story we covered recently here on News 4 involving a veteran who was on the verge of losing his home because the rent was about to increase significantly.
Jerry wrote in to ask what happened to Don Porter. Jerry wants to know if he ended getting evicted or if he found a new place to live.
Here's what I found out:
Here is some video of that story we did with Don, just to refresh your memory. He was at the end of his rope because he lives on a fixed income, and his landlord has decided to nearly double the rent where he is living.
Don can't afford that and was worried he was about to become homeless. That's when News 4 got involved. We aired Don's story and it got some attention.
Here's the update: I spoke with Don, and he was able to find a new apartment in town where he will be able to afford the rent. One of the lawyers over at the Senior Law Project got involved and was able to help get some of the move-in costs waived.
Don says he plans to move sometime in the next couple of weeks. We are very happy to report he won't be out on the street.
It's no secret rent and housing prices are climbing around here, and this is a good reminder that there are a lot of people living on fixed incomes who can't afford big increases in their rent. Luckily Don was able to get some help and land on his feet.
