Ask Joe: Whatever happened with RTC's $1 million bill fraud case?
From the Ask Joe file, we're looking into a question about an investigation that was launched after a local public agency got scammed out of a lot of money.
Our viewer Dave wrote in asking if there's an update to the story about the Regional Transportation Commission falling victim to a scam that cost the agency $1 million.
Here's what I found out:
I checked with Michael Moreno at RTC about this. It was October 2016 when RTC received an email that looked to be from a vendor, Granite Construction.
An RTC employee made a pay-out for $1.4 million that was instead sent to a fraudulent account.
The case remains under investigation nearly one year later, and RTC has not released any information about the employee involved.
However, Moreno says the agency did get a partial recovery of the funds in January of this year. That partial recovery was $532,000, or 40 percent of the amount that was lost.
It was arranged through the FBI and the bank, but that's about all Moreno could say about that.
So it's in the hands of the FBI. These are not easy cases to solve when you're talking about online fraud or scams.
It's scary that one transaction could result in a loss like this but at least RTC has been able to get some of that money back. Let's hope they can get all of it back eventually.
