Ask Joe: Has Sparks approved recreational pot sales?
From the Ask Joe file, one of our viewers has reached out with a question about recreational marijuana sales.
Richard Wilder from Spanish Springs wrote in asking about the status of the marijuana dispensaries in Sparks.
Wilder says he called the Silver State Relief Dispensary and was told they are not offering recreational sales on July 1 because the Sparks City Council hasn't approved recreational sales yet.
So his question is, Where do things stand in Sparks?
Here's what I found out:
I checked into this, and recreational sales have not been cleared to start in Sparks. But the issue should be resolved soon.
The Sparks City Council is scheduled to discuss the issue at its upcoming meeting on July 10. According to assistant city manager Neil Krutz it will be a yes or no vote on whether to approve recreational marijuana sales.
This week the council did approve a basic business license fee for dispensaries, which will be 3 percent of the businesses' annual sales.
That set the stage for next month's vote.
So that's where it stands. There are three medical marijuana dispensaries in Sparks, including Silver State Relief, and again we should know on July 10 whether they will be given the green light to sell recreational pot.
That meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. It's the regular city council meeting, and it is open to the public.
As always, if you have a question, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll be happy to look into it!
