Ask Joe: Any plans for bus service to Tesla site?
From the Ask Joe file, a question Friday about bus service and Tesla.
Ron wrote in asking if RTC is going to start bus service for Tesla workers out to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center anytime soon.
Its a good question since there are thousands of people now working out at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Reno and Sparks.
I checked with Joe Harrington about this. He says RTC already does serve the industrial center through their vanpool program.
He said that since the area is so big, a bus route would result in people waiting a very long time between stops and would be less efficient than the vanpool program.
Just to give you a little perspective, the industrial center footprint is larger than Reno and Sparks combined. So there's a lot of territory out there to cover and a lot of businesses where buses would need to stop.
The RTC and some employers do offer a subsidy for participating in vanpooling, so they work with companies to make it as easy and affordable as possible.

Also, I did check with Tesla, and the company told me it provides free commuter shuttle service for its employees to and from some nearby cities, including Reno and Sparks.
