Bear cubs orphaned in April reintroduced to Lake Tahoe backcountry
Four bear cubs that were orphaned in April 2016 have been reintroduced to the wild.
The cubs spent the past 10 months being cared for at Animal Ark in Reno. They were placed in hibernation last fall, weighing between 7 and 10 pounds, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife estimates they are 10 times larger now.
The cubs were taken to an artificial den in the Lake Tahoe backcountry. Wildlife staff sedated them, blindfolded them and flew them to their new home in pairs.
NDOW expects the cubs - two boys and two girls - to emerge in the spring and begin their new lives in the wild.
