California Highway Patrol officials have identified the suspect who allegedly tried to kill a highway officer on Thursday as 28-year-old Austin Scott of Reno.

Officer Michael Ericson, a 17-year veteran of CHP, is recovering in critical but stable condition, officials said at a press conference Friday.

Scott was booked into Sacramento County Jail and faces charges of attempted murder, assault of an officer in the line of duty and driving under the influence, among others, according to his booking information.

Scott's brother Dylan confirmed with News 4 that Austin Scott lives in Reno.

Dylan said he didn't expect his brother to take things this far. Dylan said, "He's always done a lot of bad stuff. Well, not a lot, but you know, a troubled kid, had a rocky past. But I never thought he would go to this extreme and do something this intense."

It's unclear where Austin Scott was headed, but his brother said he loves the beach, and that could have been his possible destination.

(AP) -- The California Highway Patrol says a man ran over a motorcycle officer before leading police on a 50-mile chase across a portion of northern California.

Patrol spokesman Chad Hertzell says the officer sustained "major" injuries when he was run over Thursday near Sacramento. No information on his condition was available.

Hertzell says the man fled westbound on Interstate 80, ditching his pickup truck after eight miles. Authorities say he commandeered another pickup that had been left unattended with the keys inside at a construction site.

CHP spokesman David Harvey says Solano-area officers laid spike strips that stopped the suspect in Fairfield, northeast of San Francisco, about 20 minutes after the chase began.

The man was taken into custody.
