Winter camp program offered children at UNR this winter break
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) -- Fun and learning go hand in hand at KIDS University, which offers full-day winter break camps for children in grades 2-8 on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
The program includes nine themed, week-long sessions Jan. 8-12, 2018. KIDS U camps are designed to incorporate the academic STEAM components — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math — with a healthy dose of FUN.
There are nine topics from which to choose, including:
Mischievous Math — New curriculum! (Grades 2-4) Put down your pencils and get ready to learn hands-on! Dive into geometry, algebra, graphing, fractions, money counting and word problems. From a marshmallow toothpick challenge and Fruit Loops graphing to polygon monsters and fractions with M&M’s, we’ll explore math in fun and creative ways.
Jedi Academy (Grades 2-5)
Do you have dreams of becoming a Jedi Knight? Padawans, grab your lightsabers because now’s your chance! Learn the light side of the force by one of our Jedi Masters in our own Jedi Academy!
KIDS U Zoo (Grades 2-5)
Explorers wanted! Travel and discover the native animals and their habitats from all seven continents. From the desolate desert to deep in the rainforest, you’ll get to know different creatures and create your own safari guide of your journey. Be creative and design your own imaginative animal and habitat.
Witchcraft and Wizardry 101 (Grades 4-8)
Grab your wand and take a journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Compete in a house cup competition, explore the magical world of Harry Potter and learn more about author J.K. Rowling. Don’t worry — mischief will be managed!
Paint It! Winter Wonderland (Grades 5-8)
Learn about how to use a pattern, mix colors and use correct brushes to create different effects as you express your inner artist. Create a different masterpiece each day. By the end of the week, you’ll have five snowman art pieces to take home.
New! Supercharged Science (Grades 3-5)
Explore the awesome power of science. Learn about weather as you experiment with lightning, tornados and rainclouds. You’ll even create your own crystal snowflake. Discover how the human body works by making paper bag lungs, mechanical hands, brain hats and cell models. Then build and blast a bottle rocket. Supercharged fun!
New! Anatomy Academy (Grades 4-6)
Ever wonder how your body works? Explore the human body from the tiniest elements to the large systems that allow us to grow. We’ll make a drop of blood, learn how our brain sends important messages, make model lungs and digestive systems, and explore the different muscles and bones.
New! Environmental Exploration (Grades 5-8) Want to help the environment? Discover what it takes to be an environmental scientist and what current issues they face. You will explore the flow of energy that travels through animals and plants, create a food web and calculate your carbon footprint.
New! The Art of Mathematics (Grades 5-8) Who would guess the underlying beauty of symmetry in nature and art contains math? Learn how math plays an important role in beauty and function of life as you make a golden ratio, fractals and polyhedrons. Each day you will take home a piece of art and an appreciation for the math that helped create it.
