UNR launches effort to recruit future teachers

RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) - The University of Nevada, Reno is launching a new program to recruit more high schoolers into teaching careers revolving around math and science.

NevadaTeach is the university's version of the national UTeach initiative.

Nevada teach enables students to study and major in "STEM" subjects --- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-- while also getting certified to teach at no additional cost.

Program representatives say there just aren't enough people with backgrounds that include both teaching, and a math or science.

Nevada Teach will be a joint effort between the University's College of Education, College of Engineering and College of Science.

"Last year it was a high number of vacancies in Clark County and Washoe County for teachers who were qualified to teach math and science and so a lot of vacancies," said Gina Tempel, associate dean of the College of Science at UNR. "We need to be producing more teachers who have these qualifications."
