NV senator proposes higher freeway speeds

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KRNV & -- Nevada State Republican Senator Don Gustavson has proposed legislation that would allow Nevada Department of Transportation to increase highway speeds to 80-85mph.

Currently, Nevada state law restricts NDOT to set highway speeds of no more than 75 mph.

Gustavson says higher speeds have been shown to lower accident rates in Utah and Texas, where higher speeds than Nevada are currently allowed.

Gustavson has already consulted with NDOT, and there is likelihood that NDOT could begin approving remote stretches of Interstates 15 & 80 for increased speeds of 80 mph if the legislation passed.
