Man dies after allegedly carjacking NHP vehicle

UPDATE - 8:00PM - NHP says the incident happened at 3:55pm. NHP attempted to stop a gray 2013 Ford Explorer eastbound on IR-80 at Mustang. The car had three males and one female inside of it. The driver is being identified as 29-year-old Manuel Alejandro Rodriguez out of Jacksonville FL, and 23-year-old Christian M. Magllano Alzpurua out of Jacksonville FL. The female has been identified as Mollie Bass. The other male has not been identified at this time. NHP says one of the suspects left the vehicle and stole Trooper Niveral's patrol vehicle and drove eastbound on IR80 at an unknown speed.

As other law enforcement vehicles started chasing the stolen patrol car, they attempted to disable it by shooting out the tires. Law enforcement was able to disable the vehicle on IR80 at Mustang where the suspect exited the patrol vehicle along with the trooper's shotgun and carjacked a 2007 Silver Pontiac Grand Prix. The driver of the Grand Prix was unharmed.

NHP says the suspect then continued eastbound in the Grand Prix at unknown speeds. He attempted to pass a semi truck when for an unknown reason, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

The suspect exited the vehicle with the stolen shotgun and began shooting in the air before opening fire on himself, NHP says. He then crossed over into the westbound travel lanes where he shot himself two more times, at which time he was treated for his injuries.

NHP says the suspect did not survive his self inflicted gunshots wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of victim will not be released until the Washoe County Coroner's Office has positively identified him and the next of kin has been notified. The female suspect's name will be released as it becomes known.

UPDATE - 6:30PM - Police on scene say the trooper who the vehicle was stolen from is not missing and is okay.

UPDATE - 6:05PM - Nevada Department of Transportation just tweeted that IR80 is closed starting at W. Fernley Exit 46 and continuing a mile east.

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & -- Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting that a man has stolen and abandoned an NHP vehicle before shooting himself.

According to Barb Stapleton with NHP, there was a routine traffic stop by NHP on a passenger vehicle at I-80 and Mustang. One of the occupants of the vehicle got out and stole the NHP vehicle and took off on I-80 eastbound. After traveling on I-80 eastbound and being pursued by NHP, the male suspect then abandoned the NHP car at I-80 and Patrick and took a disabled vehicle to continue on I-80 eastbound, Stapleton says.

The suspect tried to maneuver the vehicle around a semi-truck and ended up rolling the vehicle. Stapleton says he then got out of the vehicle with a shotgun and shot himself.

Medical personnel are at the scene attempting to revive the suspect.

NHP says traffic is at a standstill heading westbound as of Exit 32.
