3 human cases of West Nile virus reported in Lyon County

MGN Online

Three human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Lyon County, two of which were detected through a blood donation pre-screening process, according to health officials in Carson City.

These are the first cases reported in Lyon County for 2017. The three individuals with the virus were diagnosed with a less severe form of the illness, Dustin Boothe, disease control and prevention manager, said in a statement Tuesday.

The Disease Control and Prevention Division with Carson City Health and Human Services oversees disease surveillance and investigations for Lyon County.

These are the first human cases reported this year for the tri-county area, which includes Lyon and Douglas counties and Carson City. Washoe County's first human case of West Nile for 2017 was already confirmed, according to a statement released last week.

Health officials remind people that the best way to avoid West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites through methods like using repellent, wearing pants and long sleeves, and removing standing water.
