Fire north of Pyramid Lake burns estimated 94,221 acres, 85 percent contained
A fire just north of Pyramid Lake has burned an estimated 94,221 acres and is 85 percent contained as of 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
The Tohakum 2 Fire was reported about 40 miles north of Nixon on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at about 7:30 p.m. The fire is burning in steep and inaccessible terrain, fire officials reported Wednesday.
Crews on Sunday will work the fire using air resources, engines and dozers to slow the rate of spread. Several areas in the fire perimeter are now controlled, enabling resources to shift to areas that are actively burning, according to the BLM.
With that, firefighters are staying on the line to reduce travel time on the heavily impacted Highway 447 corridor.
Nevada Highway Patrol on Thursday said Highway 447 had been reopened in both directions between Nixon and Empire. The road was shut down for nearly 12 hours preventing many tourists from getting to Burning Man.
