Crash on I-80E near Pyramid Way sends three to hospital

3:15 - UPDATE - NHP says the driver of the sedan, (a 1994 Subaru) 19-year-old Ateeq Paul, and his passenger and brother, 24-year-old Suneet Paul, both from Sparks, drove into the work zone area at a very high rate of speed.

Their sedan managed to travel between an area where a truck and trailer were parked and the temporary concrete barrier separating the shoulder and the left eastbound travel lane. The right side of their sedan pushed some of the sections of the barrier out of alignment while the left side of their sedan peeled back the fender of the utility trailer and scraped or side-swiped the right side of the truck.

The Subaru continued until it hit the rear portion of another parked flatbed truck and a construction worker before coming to a stop. Cameron Owens, 24, of Reno, whose back was toward the approaching sedan, never saw or heard the vehicle approaching. After being hit by the sedan, he sustained a lower extremity fracture.

Both Paul brothers had to be extricated from their vehicle by Sparks Fire Department personnel. They were transported to Renown Regional Medical Center by ground ambulance. Ateeq has very serious to critical injuries while the elder brother has serious injuries. Troopers are at the hospital this afternoon to ascertain if any type of impairment was a contributing factor to this crash.

2:40 - UPDATE - Allen says the driver of the green sedan is in critical condition and currently in surgery.

The passenger in the vehicle was the driver's brother. He sustained serious injuries and is still being questioned by Sparks Police Department.

Allen says the construction worker injured in the crash sustained moderate injuries, with a broken foot and some bruising, but is expected to be fine.

1:10PM - UPDATE - Chuck Allen with NHP says the the crash happened just before noon. A green sedan traveling at a high rate of speed, was attempting to pass vehicles on the left and veered into the shoulder where there were construction workers.

The car hit a parked vehicle and a section of the construction barrier, then traveled further down into the shoulder/ construction zone where he hit a construction worker.

The construction worker sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and has been transported to Renown. The two people traveling in the sedan had to be extricated by Sparks Fire and transported to Renown as well.

Allen says the left lane on I-80E will be most likely closed for the next one or two hours while crews clean up and the investigation continues.
