City leaders, area nonprofits hold public meeting to discuss helping the homeless

Temporary homeless overflow shelter opens in Reno (MGN Online)

City leaders and Washoe County nonprofit groups are holding a panel meeting to discuss homelessness Thursday, November 17 at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The event is to get the community's input and ideas on the best ways to help people struggling with homelessness in Washoe County. They will also discuss roadblocks to escaping systematic oppression and the criminalization of poverty.

The event is open to the public and child-friendly. Organizers are encouraging anyone who has ideas or is interested in learning more about the topic to attend. It is happening at the William J. Raggio Building in room 2003.

The event will have a donation box to help individuals in the community who suffer from poverty, prepare for winter. They are requesting blankets, hats, jackets, gloves, warm clothing, backpacks, new underwear, boots, socks, gift cards and toiletries.
