Caretaker arrested in connection to suspicious death of toddler in Carson City

2-year-old Coahuyana Hernandez

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspicious death after responding to an unresponsive 2-and-a-half-year-old toddler on Friday evening.

Deputies responded to the 100 block of Manzanita Terrace in North Carson City on the report of an unresponsive toddler that had fallen.

When deputies responded, the child's caretaker was administering CPR. The caretaker has been identified as 26-year-old Eric Buhl.

Paramedic crews on scene treated the toddler and rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Detectives searched the home on Manzanita Terrace. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed a pipe bomb was found inside Buhl's bedroom.

When detectives on scene confronted Buhl about the pipe bomb, he confirmed the device was live.

The Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad was called in. They were able to disarm the pipe bomb just before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Buhl was arrested and charged with Possession of an Explosive Device (Felony), and Child Endangerment (Gross Misdemeanor).

Buhl has also been named as a suspect in the death of 2-year-old Coahuyana Hernandez. His bail is set at $250,000.

Officials also searched a second residence on Yukon Court. That home was released back to the residents early Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff Furlong said detectives continue to investigate the death of Coahuyana Hernandez. They were conducting interviews late into Saturday night.

Officials said an autopsy was performed on Saturday. Results from the Medical Examiner are still pending.
