Bertha Miranda inducted into Nevada Women's Fund Hall of Fame

RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- The Nevada Women's Fund has announced Bertha Miranda as their 2014 Hall of Fame inductee. Miranda, a humanitarian and restaurateur, will receive this honor at the Annual Salute to Women of Achievement Event, scheduled for May 29 at John Ascuaga's Nugget.

Miranda opened her flagship restaurant, Bertha Miranda's, in 1984. After having a location on East 4th St. and one in Sparks, the Mill St. location opened in 1990 and became the location we all know and love today. The opening of Bertha Miranda's was only the beginning of Miranda's personal success and community involvement.

Born in 1942 in Santa Barbara, Chiuahua, Mexico, and raised in the northern city of Juarez, Miranda earned a business and public relations degree from the Greg Academy Business School in 1959. The mother of five uses her experience and knowledge to teach others perseverance and the importance of education. Growing up not being able to afford the education she yearned for, Miranda established the "Bertha Miranda Scholarship Fund" for Latino students, offering scholarships to students attending the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College. Since its inception in 1996, 56 recipients have receiving funding towards education.

Her support for her employees does not go unnoticed. She has inspired several of her employees to fulfill their dreams and open their own restaurants in the Reno-Sparks area. Her vision to showcase the diversity of Mexican cuisine has created close to 300 jobs over the years. Her family, friends and employees all know her passion for education and the importance of registering to vote. A trusted voice in the community, she is known for having a way of making people feel special, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

For her latest project, "Slow Food To Go", Miranda is teaming up with her current employees who have been with her for over 20 years. The business, as the name implies, will offer delicious Mexican food at a convenient location for diners to pick up and take home.
