A 42-year-old Reno man has been sentenced to 53 years in prison for the shooting death of Seth Lucas in April 2015, according to prosecutors.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says Hector Padilla was sentenced Tuesday, June 13, on charges of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He pleaded guilty to the charges back in April.

Padilla was arrested in August 2015 in southern California, where his own family turned him in to local police, according to prosecutors.

Padilla shot and killed the 41-year-old Lucas on April 14, 2015, in his home in the 200 block of Crampton Street in Reno.

Detectives determined Padilla had shot Lucas in the chest during an argument in which Padilla confronted Lucas about allowing Padilla's girlfriend to hide in the basement of a home in which Lucas was residing.

Prosecutors say that Padilla's girlfriend said she and Padilla had a violent relationship and on April 13, 2015, the two had an argument that led to the girlfriend jumping out of Padilla's vehicle at a stop light. She went to a friend's nearby home on Crampton Street.

During sentencing, prosecutors argued that Padilla went to the home on Crampton Street with the intent to kill Seth Lucas based on his rage after hearing that Lucas participated in the hiding of his girlfriend.
