One person is dead after a pickup truck was struck by a Union Pacific freight train just east of Sparks Saturday morning, according to officials.

Storey County Manager Pat Whitten tells News 4-Fox 11 that at 8:12 a.m. Saturday, June 17, officials received a call from Union Pacific Dispatch that a pickup truck had rolled onto the track and was hit by a freight train. The collision took place just east of the Painted Rock exit on Interstate 80.

Whitten says the driver killed in the crash is a male, and the truck has a California license plate.

"As of 30 minutes ago, we had two tow trucks en route to remove the vehicle," Whitten says. "It's a difficult place to get (a vehicle) out."

Whitten says the driver was not wearing a seat belt, and appears to be the only person in the truck.

Union Pacific has put a hold on all train traffic just before 9 a.m., Whitten says.
