Knowing Nevada: Secrets hidden below downtown Reno
During the mid-1960s, bomb shelters were common additions to homes and buildings under construction.
Several still exist throughout Reno, including underneath the downtown Washoe County Library.
What is not a common sight, however, is the World War II submarine engine found well below Harrah's Reno.
In 1962, Bill Harrah needed a backup generator to power his hotel-casino and he wanted something that no other gaming property had.
The engine still sits below Second and Center streets and is still the backup generator for the building.
