Westergard teacher named Excellence in Education Award winner

Congratulations to Mrs. Tavia Williams, our Excellence in Education Award winner for the month of May!

We all have "that" one teacher, who made a mark on our minds and in our hearts, and Washoe County has a special teacher at the helm of a third-grade classroom who does just that.

Recently, evening anchor Shelby Sheehan surprised third-grade teacher Tavia Williams with News 4's Excellence in Education Award. The surprise for both Williams and her students came during class at Westergard Elementary School.

Williams has been teaching in the Washoe County School District for 23 years. Parents say her enthusiasm is, simply put, contagious.

Williams works tirelessly to meet each student's needs, and at the same time, figures out ways to make learning fun! An example: the payoff for her "40 Book Challenge Lateover."

When the students read all 40 books, they get an evening of fun and games in her class. The party goes from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

It's definitely above and beyond from the parents' perspective, but to Williams, worth every minute.

It's not just games for Williams, though; she takes ongoing professional development classes to keep up with the latest in education.

Congratulations to Mrs. Tavia Williams, our Excellence in Education Award winner for the month of May!
