A Washoe County school teacher with a diverse teaching background is making sure her students are ready for the 21st Century world and this month she is News Four's Excellence in Education Award Winner!

Evening anchor Shelby Sheehan surprised 4th grade teacher Erica Elliot with the award recently during a school assembly.

Elliot is a UNR graduate who has been teaching elementary school in Washoe County for 18 years.

She started at Bernice Matthews, then taught at Alice Smith and is now in her 4th year at Jessie Beck.

Elliot says her 14 years at title one schools gave her a solid background that required a lot of hard work but taught her critical skills when it comes to fostering growth in all children.

Prinicipal Erin Lane says Elliot encourages her students to collaborate, communicate and use real world problem solving, with an engaging teaching style.

She serves on multiple committees at school and is always looking to raise the education bar with her twenty seven 4th graders.

Congratulations to Erica Elliot, News Four's Excellence in Education Award Winner!
