Jefferson Award: Helen DeMarco

Getting kids away from video games and into reading is the goal of of the Sierra Sundays Book Club and News 4 is proud to honor one of the group's members with the Jefferson Award for outstanding community service.

Helen DeMarco helps out by going to schools and libraries where she reads to kids and helps them practice their story telling. When the program is finished each child gets a brand new book. Since the program started they've given away 3,800 books and taught a lot of kids about the value of the written word.

"Anything to improve the reading efforts of children," DeMarco told News 4. "They're so committed to battery operated things at this time, we like them to have a book. Something they can hold in their hand, something they can read to somebody else," she said.

News 4 and Wells Fargo are proud partners of the Jefferson Award program. Every month we honor an individual who goes out of his or her way to help the community in some way. Congratulations once again to Helen DeMarco, our Jefferson Award winner for the month of December.
